Description
Map from a Letter (MSS.AAFH.002-013) written by Viceroy Bucareli reporting his decision regarding the proposal of the commandant of Upper California to move the Presidio and town of Monterey. Mexico City, September 19, 1774
Collection summery: 1 box (42 items) ; 39 x 27 x 7 cm
Handwritten correspondence between missionaries and government officials regarding presidios and Franciscan missions of Upper California. Includes letters to and from Viceroy Bucareli, Fernando de Riverà y Moncada, Josʹe de Galvez, Francisco Palʹou, Juan Crespi, Estevan Basava, Lorenzana, Rafel Verger, Luis Jayme, Junʹipero Sera, Felipe de Neve, Juan Joseph de Echeveste, Pedro Feges, Miguel Constanso, Fermin de Lasuʹen, Mathias de Noriega, Viceroy Conde de Revillagigedo, and Viceroy Branciforte. Bulk of correspondence is between Viceroy Antonio Marʹia Ursʹua y Bucareli and Fernando de Rivera y Moncada and centers on decisions regarding mission affairs such as budgeting issues and governing, and the establishment of new missions at various locations throughout California. Four of the forty-two manuscripts in the box are not correspondence. Manuscripts 29 and 30 are summaries of matters at the mission at Monterey (Mission San Carlos Borromeo). Manuscript 13 is Viceroy Bucareli's decision to about the new mission in San Francisco (Mission San Francisco de Asʹis), and manuscript 39 is a report on one of the missions for the year 1779.
